Walking in the Park and Reminiscing...about JDRF Walks Past.

JDRF One Walk Reimagined

Like everything else in 2020, the annual JDRF One Walk had to be reimagined. For the past 3 years in the Bay Area our family has participated in the San Francisco walk as part of the Salesforce Type 1 Diabetes team. But this year, instead of the walk happening on just one day, we're walking every day in our own neighborhoods and logging our miles .

That’s been a fairly solitary activity - which on the whole has been fine by me! But my wife’s friend Michelle had a great idea of pulling together some of my daughter’s friends and family for a socially distanced walk. So this past Saturday, 17 of us gathered at Cesar Chavez Park near the Berkeley Marina to commemorate a 2020 version of the walk.

Despite living here in the Berkeley area for the past 9 years - and commuting from the Berkeley marina to San Francisco for the past 2+ years, I had never been to Cesar Chavez Park. And while we had a relatively overcast morning, it was still such a great experience walking around the 1.25 mile Dorothy Stegmann trail which circles the perimeter of the park. There’s views of San Francisco, the north Bay, and the East Bay throughout - and you’ll spot some great wildlife, pelicans, seals, and of course, kites flying in the wind!

Shooting RAW on an Overcast Day

I took my Z6 with me and shot consistently in manual mode, trying to capture the spirit/feel of the walk while also trying to be a participant at the same time. Not an easy task!

While many of the photos I shot in RAW were initially flat (not uncommon for RAW files) and somewhat hazy given the lighting conditions, a few creative edits in Lightroom brought more clarity, detail, and even some hidden blue skies.

Raising Awareness and Support for Type 1 Diabetes

All told we walked a collective 30+ miles - upping Roya’s T1D Warriors to 364+ miles and counting! We’ll continue walking till November 1st to hit the overall JDRF goal of walking 1.6 million miles representing the 1.6 million Americans living with Type 1 diabetes. If you want to learn more about this effort, Type 1 diabetes, or supporting the walk, check out our JDRF Walk page.
